Devil May Cry 3

Code 1: Dante

I first looked at the manga and how thick it was, and I originally thought it was going to take me more than 15 minutes to read. Of course, this manga is a "100% authentic manga", and you have to read right-to-left. It came with this instruction:

This book is printed in "manga style," in the authentic Japanese right-to-left format. Since none of the artwork has been flipped or altered, readers get to experience the story just as the creator intended.

As I was reading that, I originally thought "who gives a shit?" I just wanted to read it. And since this is my first manga, it took some getting used to.

The artwork is simply beautiful. I think they did a great job illustrating the characters in this manga. The story was all over the place and didn't make much sense. I found the violence funny -- like a part where Vergil and Arkham are in a library, they're looking for a book, Arkham asks what Vergil is looking for, the librarian over-hears, comes in to assist them both by saying "Oh... I know. How about the story of how the woman who copulated with the demon... gave birth to twin sons. Is this tale more to your liking?" the library goes all quite, Vergil looks at her in the corner or his eye and very quickly cuts her in half and the top half of her body splats onto a wall with her bones shattering to the floor. Okay, to me, that was actually stupid. And the random naked breasts of the librarian at this point actually annoyed me, was it really necessary? Infact, there was lots of naked ladies in this book. Mainly because Dante is a man-whore and actually lives at Love Planet.

I loved Dante's personality in this. He used worse bad language than he did in the game, and he had one hell of a horny mouth which amused me to no end.

The only thing I didn't get about this was the boys' shadows. They were demonic form just like Sparda's shadow as a human. In the games, that doesn't happen. Dante also Devil Triggers in this, but it looks maturer than his Devil Trigger in Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening Video game, because it looked like Sparda.

In the end, I loved this little manga. It was amusing, full of action and illustrated with the most beautiful artwork. The characters seem darker than they actually are in the games, but still fun to read about.

Quotes

And now I leave you with some of my favourite parts of the manga.

Enzo: Would it kill to leave this filthy room and go grab some U.V. once in awhile? Or maybe even crack a window? It smells like corn chips and ass in here!

Arkham Madhatter: Your brother, whom you thought dead... he still lives. Isn't that wonderful? VERGIL IS COMING HOME! Oh, I simply ADORE family reuninions! Shall we put on the tea?
Dante: Pal... you can shove that teapot... up your rabbit hole!

Alice: You saved me... my hero. LOOK! I have breasts! And my legs are so long. Do you like me, Dante? Do you want me? Am I desirable as an adult?
Dante: Is this a trick question? Let me guess. If I say no, you wear my guts for garters. I say yes, you eat me starting with my cock.

Eva: YOU MUST NEVER COME OUT! NO MATTER WHAT, YOU MUST HIDE! LISTEN TO ME, DANTE! NO MATTER WHAT! AAAGHHHHH!

Offcial Manga profile

Rational, yet selfish.

He suffers from a self-loathing complex regarding his existence as neither human nor demon. For that reason, he seeks power to validate his existence.

Vergil's father was a demon. His heritage fuels not only his drive, but his pain as well.

Vergil's mother was a human. He is constantly aware of the cancerous human emotions living inside him. His human side serves as a bottomless well of fuel for the rage that dwells inside him.

Vergil also believes that his mother loved dante more than him, and that the power dante possesses is rightfully his.

I can't stand his manga profile. I don't care if you think it's "official", either -- the games are above all else and not once did Vergil state any of that nor did his actions. It was never clear.

Thoughts

Even though this is Dante's manga, Vergil does have some page time. He insults Arkham quite a bit, calling him "bald and ugly" and I thought that was very unlike video game Vergil, because I could never imagine him resorting to cheap insults. Arkham seems to treat Vergil as some sort of student in this manga, but Vergil doesn't really pay attention to Arkham's bullshit. He takes less shit than he does in the games, also. He also doesn't talk as much, and when it does it's usually mocking something that's been said by another

Something that interested me was how Vergil was when being insulted by the thugs. They were calling him such names like "fruitloop", "pretty boy" and that he's "pretending" to be "samurai". He doesn't care. They then point out that if he's "fond of breathing", he's to pay the toll -- one of them reaches for his yamato hilt, stating he isn't going to use Vergil's own sword against him, but is gonna cut him up a bit -- IT'S ONLY AT THIS POINT! Vergil reacts by chopping them all up to tiny pieces. You know -- he can take insults and other crap, but not someone wanting his sword.

When talking to Alice's Rabbit, it offers him some advice which was him telling Vergil he NEEDS Dante. Vergil took offence to this, because the advice was given to him by a "rag doll" and cuts him into confetti leaving the rabbits head for the girl to hold. Which she does, crying her eyes out, and Vergil watches her, he could have killed the annoying wretch, but he didn't. He cut up the rest of the head stating that if all you can do is cry over a loved one, then it's better off gone. I think people might believe that that is Vergil being a mean fuck (which he was), but I think it connects to past experiences with his mother. Perhaps all he did was cry (yes. You might think he's a "villain" or an evil bastard, but he did have a mother) over his mother, making him realise these "cancerous" human emotions of his, and realising that all he could do at the time was cry, it is indeed, best he tries to forget.

And since Vergil was taken by demons at a very young age after his mother's death, his mind was still young, and was corrupted by demons, I guess. So yes, the way he thinks, acts and believes is all down to the demonic scum that nurtured him until he was man enough to fight for their cause, since they're playing him in the manga like they did in the video games. Since he was influenced by demons at a very young age, he wouldn't have remembered much from being brought up by humans, thus, believing that the demon way of living was superior to the human way of life.

Of course, this is entirely my opinion, and there wasn't much information given to us on Vergil in this, but that is what I gathered.

Vergil Quotes

Great story, old man. Can't wait to see the movie. However... that's not the book I'm looking for. So save your breath.

The next one lands across your neck.

You done, tall, bald and ugly?

Vergil: Are you telling me I'm only half a man?
Rabi: N-no, I'm just saying you and Dante need each other!
Vergil: Advice from a rag doll. How insulting. [Cuts him up]

Young Alice: [being watched by Vergil as she cries over the rabbit dolls head] Rabi, Rabi, Rabi, Rabi, Rabi, ngh... ngh... Rabi...
Vergil: [Vergil uses his Yamato to chop it into confetti out of the girl's hands] If all you can do is cry... then it's better that it's gone.
Young Alice: Ah... AGGGHHH!!

Devil May Cry 3

Code 2: Vergil

Out of the two mangas, I like Dante's better. Yeah, be shocked, but it's true, Dante's manga was a whole lot more fun and explosive... I was disappointed in the amount of Vergil in there, I expected him in it more than he was. This one was okay, it actually had more story to it, and I love what Vergil did in the end I think he secretly felt guilty and used "I can take it from him anytime I wish" as an excuse. Plus, Temen-Ni-Gru was mentioned.

Basically, Arkham wants to open up Temen-Ni-Gru (of course, claiming it is all for Vergil), but needs Vergil to protect him and face the demons that require their names Sparda took from them. A demon (I'd... like to say Mundus, but I'm not entirely sure who it is) wants to know if Vergil can be trusted with this task, and getting both brothers to clash -- Arkham just says he'll "dangle" Vergil in front of Dante and Dante'll come running.

Vergil ends up getting Dante's half of the amulet, Dante aims at his brother, but can't pull the trigger. Arkham (Disguised as a madhatter figure) explains that Vergil needs the amulet, otherwise Temen-Ni-Gru won't help them. Vergil behaves erratically and throws Dante's amulet back to him. Arkham desperatly tries to explain that the amulet is for the best, but Vergil tells him not to interfere, and that he can take Dante's amulet anytime he wants. That to me was actually an excuse. Perhaps Vergil saw that his brother was too weak since he couldn't pull the trigger.
